The blend of Indonesia's traditional pattern, importance of family and love for cultural foods.

While growing up my brothers moved out early, leaving me as the only child left in the family home. The different plate sizes represent the portions of food three out of five of my family members eat. The repetitive pattern throughout all plates is one of West Sumatra’s oldest patterns (Batik Kawung) and is recognised across all of Indonesia, this pattern symbolises humans who remember their origins and one’s ability to grow and be resourceful for their community, family and friends. Utilising this pattern for my piece not only represents West Sumatra’s rich culture and morals, but also I play with the idea of sensory within our culture as Indonesian’s eat with their hands, therefore able to feel the texture of the pattern when they eat. 

By applying the industrial method of ceramic slip-casting and laser cutting templates of the pattern, I was able to replicate three plates. With the pattern printed on through decorative slip and intentionally carved edges, trimming the plates into different sizes, aiming to create the plates appear like puzzle pieces to represent connection.
