I ran my first ever workshop, and was so grateful for the opportunity to be focused on being a reminder of Indonesian culture, heritage, and identity.

During the workshops, I introduced participants to the history and stories behind two traditional batik motifs: Batik Kawung and Parang, before teaching them the traditional batik tulis (hand-drawn batik) technique. With the assistance of artist Aiya, we guided our participants through the process, including the dyeing of their completed works.

I completed the final finishing process myself at home, including removing the wax and ironing each piece. To extend the learning beyond the workshop, I also designed and provided participants with a “How To” postcard explaining the process, along with a thank-you card for them to take home.

Through these workshops, I aimed to create an accessible, hands-on way for participants to engage with batik while learning about the cultural stories, traditions, and identity connected to the art form.
